WW1 and The Great war are the same name just 2 different names. The Great war was used but when the war started but when WW2 it was called World War 1 just so it dose not get to complex. Because if you say The Great War and then World War 2 it dose not make scene

WW1 started because when the heir of Hungary was killed by some people who wanted to unite some of Hungary with Serbia. 1 mouth later Hungary declared war on Serbia. Serbia ally Russia joined the war witch French was allied with Russia and the UK joined the war because they where French's ally. Then Germany joined Hungary in the war and declared war on France and British. The Italy declared war on Germany and Hungary. And soon all the nations where in the war. The United States joined the war in 1917 because Germany was hitting US ships. You may ask, " Why didnt the US get involved in 1914?" That is because US wanted to stay out of the war. People came to the US to avoid war in the Europe. But during the last year of World War 1 France, UK,and the US pushed past the Germany Trenches and went into Germany. Germany and Hungary Surrender on the 11 month of the 11 hour of the 11 day in 1918. But about 20 years later they will be in war once more. Also known as World War 2.
